SEO, AEO and GEO: what each one actually does

SEO gets your page into search results. AEO gets your answer extracted into a featured snippet or voice result. GEO gets your business named inside an AI generated recommendation. They are three layers on one technical foundation, not competing choices.

What is the difference between SEO, AEO and GEO?

The difference is what each one wins. SEO wins a position in a list. AEO wins the quote displayed above that list. GEO wins a mention inside an assistant's recommendation. The same buyer may encounter all three in a single afternoon of research.

It helps to think about where a buyer actually is when each one matters. Someone typing a product name into Google is in SEO territory. Someone asking a full question and reading the box at the top is in AEO territory. Someone asking an assistant to shortlist suppliers is in GEO territory.

  • Search Engine OptimisationTechnical health, keyword strategy and content that earns a ranking position over months.
  • Answer Engine OptimisationQuestion-shaped content and structured data so an engine can lift a direct answer and attribute it to you.
  • Generative Engine OptimisationEntity clarity, machine readable structure and third party mentions so assistants name you accurately.

Why are they sold together?

Because the technical work is largely shared. Clean heading structure, fast pages, schema markup and a clearly defined entity serve all three at once. Buying them separately means paying three suppliers to do overlapping work and then mediating between them.

What genuinely differs is the content strategy. SEO wants depth on commercially valuable topics. AEO wants questions answered crisply enough to be extracted. GEO wants your identity stated consistently everywhere a model might look.

The order matters too. Without SEO foundations there is nothing for the other two to build on, because assistants and answer boxes both draw from pages that are crawlable and credible in the first place.

Which one should a business start with?

Start with the technical foundation that all three share, then weight the content effort toward wherever your buyers actually research. For most business to business firms in Malaysia that now means questions and comparisons rather than single keywords.

A useful test is to write down the last five enquiries you received and ask how each person found you. If they describe asking a question rather than searching a term, your effort belongs in AEO and GEO sooner than a keyword plan would suggest.

For a smaller specialist firm there is a real advantage here. Answer boxes and AI citations are awarded substantially on clarity and structure rather than domain size, which is why niche specialists regularly appear above larger competitors in them.

Featured snippets are the most visible form of it, but AEO also covers voice assistant answers and People Also Ask boxes. The common thread is that one source gets quoted and the others get scrolled past.
